East of England Assembly of Council Leaders

12th July 2019

Leaders from across the region met at the East of England Assembly of Council Leaders last week at the LGA Conference in Bournemouth (3 July 2019). The Assembly welcomed guest speaker, Jonathan Werran, Chief Executive, Localis. Jonathan spoke about Localis’ recent publication ‘Prosperous Communities, Productive Places’  and the role of place-leaders to deepen the relationship with major economic anchors. This provided a thought provoking discussion on the topic of local industrial strategies, and the role of councils in supporting local enterprise partnerships in their development. Leaders discussed that the East of England continues to be an important net contributor to the Treasury and the region is growing fast. These are the strengths the country needs to build on in securing a prosperous economic future for the UK as a whole, and the Local Industrial Strategies provide an important vehicle to deliver on these ambitions.

Our Annual Report 2018-2019 was presented at the meeting, along with the recent joint East of England LGA and APPG submission to the Government’s Autumn Budget and Spending Review.  The Assembly adopted our new five year Business Plan (2019 -24) and our Medium Term Financial Plan to 2024. The Business Plan confirms the five key areas of focus for the Association going forward: Economic Growth and Infrastructure, Resource Management, Health and Social Care, Workforce Development and The Impact of Exiting the EU.

Our annual East of England Reception at LGA Conference, this year sponsored by Opus People Solutions, was also well attended by Leaders, senior councillors and officers from many councils across the region.

In our Annual Report 2018-19 you can read about our highlights and achievements over the past year. The Association is always eager to demonstrate the difference we are making to our member councils in supporting them to be “the best that they can be for their communities”.
