Executive Recruitment Service bears fruit for AEA

9th May 2018

Peter Stanyon, chief executive of the Association of Electoral Administrators, approached the East of England LGA for help recruiting a deputy chief executive back in February 2018.

The AEA needed to identify a highly competent individual with a detailed knowledge of electoral processes in the UK for a role which involved responsibility for a portfolio of policy matters, leadership development, new business and to support the chief executive.
Peter knew East of England LGA would help the organisation not only pinpoint the right candidates, but carry out the appropriate recruitment processes.  After all, he was employed by AEA using this exact recruitment tool.

“They [the East of England LGA] administered a highly testing but ultimately successful process,” he said. “With our recruitment this time around the assessment centre process was invaluable in testing the all-round skills and attributes of candidates, which led to a very strong shortlist.”

The new deputy chief executive appointed was Laura Lock who excelled in the interview process and has been in the role now for one month.

Peter said: “The service provided was of the high standard expected and ultimately led to the appointment of an excellent colleague.”

Since the programme launched the East of England LGA have helped councils appoint Chief Executives, Managing Directors, Heads of Paid Service, Strategic and Executive Directors, Assistant Directors and Heads of Service.

It works by designing or reviewing job descriptions to ensure it reflects the needs of the authority and presents as an attractive proposition for candidates before using a range of platforms to locate a selection of potential employees.

A recommended shortlist is then prepared and candidates are sent to an assessment centre where a range of evaluation services are offered including psychometric assessments, interviews and a media exercise.

These can be used to test ability and suitability of candidates in areas such as numerical and verbal reasoning, aptitude, leadership and judgement.
