The Apprentice Challenge and the Local Government Apprentice of the Year 2019
Congratulations to all the apprentices and mentors who took part in the first apprentice challenge – a collaboration between the East of England LGA and Breckland Training Services with valuable support from Hertfordshire County Council and the Local Government Association. This was a great development day for all participants and we were delighted that apprentices and mentors rose to the various challenges set in front of them.
Each apprentice was assessed on a variety of activities throughout the day centred on work in a fictional District Council. Their scores after each exercise were programmed into the computer in order that we could identify the winner. As this was a serious day of development, Breckland Training Services will also be generating individual reports for each apprentice to feedback on identified strengths and weaknesses that they can use back in their workplaces.
It was a really positive day and Cllr Bob Deering [LGEP Portfolio Holder for Training, Development and Apprenticeships and Deputy Executive Member, Resources and Performance at Hertfordshire County] presented Kirsten Moore from Central Bedfordshire with the Winner’s Certificate.
Four of the apprentices were highly commended: Daisy Abraham from Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, Maz Rayner from North Norfolk District Council, Harley Gallagher from Breckland Council and Abbie Nelson from Opus People Solutions (a wholly owned Trading Company of Suffolk County Council).
Here is what the apprentices said at the end of the day…
We are still gathering feedback but apprentice Patrice Johnson from Broxburne Council told us that “It was a privilege to attend an event like this, I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
We are now looking to organise a couple of heats for early next year.
