#NAW2018 Spotlight on… Apprenticeships

5th March 2018

To mark National Apprenticeship Week #NAW2018 the East of England LGA is shining a spotlight on examples of activities and events happening in Councils across the Region to celebrate apprenticeships in local government.

Luton Borough Council is using NAW018 as an opportunity for the council to highlight its role in promoting local apprenticeship and encouraging people to choose them as a credible career option.

During the week, the council is holding an apprenticeship-focussed Luton Employment, Training and Skills (LETS) Fair on Wednesday 7 March at Venue Central on Chapel Street, from 1.00pm until 7.00pm.

With over 30 exhibitors at the event to offer help and guidance for those considering apprenticeships, attendees will be able to find out why so many people are now choosing apprenticeships as a pathway to a great career. Those visiting will be able to hear about apprenticeship training, find out about higher and further education options, hear about employment opportunities and take part in careers advice workshops.

Confirmed exhibitors include Center Parcs, Santander, Royal Navy and Royal Marines, Monarch Aircraft Engineering, Royal Airforce, TUI UK and Ireland, Arriva, CITB, and Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

Cllr Sian Timoney, Executive Portfolio Holder for Transformation, said: “Apprenticeships are a really good opportunity to learn while you earn, and completing a training programme can really improve your career prospects. With four equivalent educational levels of apprenticeships on offer from intermediary to degree level there are many future career possibilities for those considering this route.

“We have some big employers in Luton, including the council and those taking on apprentices are very committed to not only seeing them through the actual process, but also offering them training and opportunities well beyond.”

Communications apprentice Faiza Khan has created a series of short films, where those in various apprenticeship roles talk about their experiences and the benefits. These will be released daily during Apprenticeship Week to encourage those interested to attend.

Venue Central can be found at 15-17 Chapel Street, LU1 2SE and you can find out more information by contacting Natalie Jones on 01582 546422 natalie.jones@luton.gov.uk
