Festive Spirit

18th December 2018

It could not be easier to put a smile on a child’s face this Christmas with Thurrock Council's Give a Gift initiative at Intu Lakeside.
Intu have donated an empty retail shop in their Lakeside centre, which has been kitted out by Ikea and the McLaren Group are helping with the finishing touches. Inside the pop-up store is a huge tree decorated with over 1,500 stars, each one representing a Thurrock child who is in the care of Thurrock Council’s fostering service, or who need extra help and support from the children’s services. People are invited to take a star from the tree and buy a gift, each star has the name, age and sex of a Looked After Child, therefore it makes choosing something nice even easier.

The store will be open from Monday 26th November until Sunday 9th December between 9am to 10pm every day of the week. Already over 550 presents have been donated! The store is manned by officers from the Council, who will be receiving the gifts and working like Christmas elves by wrapping them too.
This is an initiative which is bringing joy to the team at the Council as we are helping our looked after children and will conversely bring them all a little bit of sunshine on Christmas day.
Lyn Carpenter, Chief Executive of Thurrock Council, invites you to visit the shop which is next to HSBC down near Costa and House of Fraser, and ‘dares you not to be moved’ by the acts of kindness.
If you have any questions about the scheme, or want to find out more email: communicationsteam@thurrock.gov.uk
