Developing Commercial Capability at Stevenage Borough Council

8th May 2019

Faced with the challenge of becoming “more entrepreneurial with our approach at Leadership team level and across the Council”, Stevenage Borough Council recently approached the East of England LGA to run an engagement and development session for their Leadership team.

Using the content of the East of England LGA’s successful “Commercial Insights for Local Authority Managers” programme and tailoring this to suit the specific brief from Stevenage, a full day event was devised, commissioned and delivered for the team less than two weeks after the initial enquiry was made.

Incorporating a mixture of game-play, interactive exercises, discussions and small group work, the day culminated in a series of very practical exercises which will inform the development of a “Commercial Strategy” for the organisation to support its broader Financial Security programme.

Interim Chief Executive, Matt Partridge, was delighted with the results:
“I’ve attended many such sessions over the years but you guys got it spot on in terms of balancing our participation alongside the provision of helpful hints and tips. We will most certainly be building upon what we took from the session as we seek to move matters forward. I’d have no hesitation in recommending you to other Local Authorities”

If your council is in a similar position with developing Commercialisation, then we would love to hear from you to discuss how we might be able to help and support you with this challenge.

As well as delivering sessions like the one for Stevenage, our Talent Bank Associates have a track record of supporting local authorities with a range of commercial activities including developing Business Cases, writing Business Plans, implementing Marketing Plans, setting up Trading Companies, as well as Mentoring and Coaching Staff who move into commercial roles.

If you want to experience the East of England LGA’s approach to developing commercial capability, then sign up for our FREE “Commercialisation Masterclass” at the Granta Centre in Cambridge on Friday 19th July:
