Cultural Competency & Safety Training training delivered by Support ME Maternal Project CIC is for anyone who supports families during pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and postnatal recovery; e.g. doulas, midwives, infant feeding practitioners, antenatal/hypnobirthing teachers and anyone else who works within the maternity field. This training is crucial to offer culturally-safe and appropriate care. It’s aim is to help you understand the faith and beliefs as well as the barriers that different communities face during maternity care. It will also give attendees the knowledge to feel more confident in starting a dialogue with families, building a relationship and ultimately offering safe maternity & perinatal care.
Workshop Outline:
• An introduction to Cultural Competency and Safety.
• Engaging and reflective workshop through discussions and exercises.
• Productive outlook on how to work with Global Majority families in a culturally safe way.
• An opportunity to ask questions and explore specific scenarios in a safe and non-judgmental space.
• Current statistics and challenges, the impact of religious and cultural practices on maternity care as well as key ways to move forward.
• Understanding complex concepts, such as infant loss, family dynamics and perinatal mental health.
