An Equality Impact Assessment (EIA) is a tool that helps public authorities make sure their policies, and the way in which they carry out their functions, do what they are intended to do and for everybody. Carrying out an EIA involves systematically assessing the likely (or actual) effects of policies on people in respect of disability,
gender, including gender identity, and racial equality and, where you choose, wider equality areas. This includes looking for opportunities to promote equality that may have previously been missed or could be better used, as well as negative or adverse impacts that can be removed or mitigated, where possible.

Workshop Outline:

  • Provide a clear definition of EIAs, explaining their purpose in identifying and mitigating potential inequalities in policies, practices, and decisions.
  • Discuss the relevant laws and regulations governing EIAs, such as the Equality Act 2010, and how these frameworks apply to organisational operations.
  • Discuss the positive outcomes of EIAs for marginalised and vulnerable groups, ensuring their needs and rights are considered and protected.
  • Highlight how EIAs can influence and improve organisational policies, making them more inclusive and effective.
  • Provide participants with practical tools such as templates and checklists to assist them in conducting EIAs effectively.
