The East of England LGA Apprenticeship Challenge 2020 – ‘Time to Shine’

Following on from the success of the East of England Local Government Apprentice of the Year 2019, we are already working on the Apprentice of the Year process for 2020.

So who will succeed Kirsten Moore from Central Bedfordshire Council to the coveted title? Could it be you or someone in your team?

There will be two apprenticeship heats held in different locations across the region. The finalists from each heat will then take part in a ‘Champion of Champions’ event later in the year which will crown the East of England Local Government Apprentice of the Year 2020.

This is the only professional development opportunity in the East of England specifically targeted at Local Government Apprentices and leading to regional recognition.

Are you (or is someone in your team or organisation):

  • A current or recently qualified (in the last 12 months) Level 2 or 3 Apprentice working in Local Government
  • Looking to push yourself and to test your skills and capability
  • Interested in challenging and developing yourself alongside others in the same position

If so, this Challenge is the event for you.

The Apprenticeship Challenge is primarily a learning and development event with a competitive edge. Your council can submit a maximum of 5 places per venue, and candidates will be put into a mixed team including members from the other councils on the day – it's a great way to build your network! This is a truly immersive learning experience which benefits everyone who participates. Ultimately, a winner is crowned!!

Every apprentice who takes part in the Challenge receives an individual report with feedback on their performance, which identifies strengths and weaknesses which they can use in their workplaces for identifying further personal development.

This event will give attendees a range of enhanced knowledge, skills and positive outcomes such as:

  • Building partnerships with relevant organisations or individuals in a variety of different settings
  • Developing inter-personal skills when working with colleagues
  • Developing and practising media handling skills, including drafting press releases, social media management and an introduction to direct media interaction
  • Developing and practicing communication and presentation skills
  • Practicing organisational, team building and time management skills
  • Developing resilience to rapidly changing priorities, demands and timescales
  • Lead to one apprentice being named “ East of England Local Government Apprentice of the Year 2020”

What people have said about the Apprentice Challenge:

  • “It was a privilege to attend an event like this, I am grateful for the opportunity”
  • “by far the best day of professional development I have ever done”
  • “The Challenge will give your staff the ability to develop skills they didn’t realise they had, pushing them outside of their comfort zone in a safe, but pressurised environment.”
