#NAW2018 Spotlight on… Apprenticeship Opportunities at Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils

7th March 2018

To mark National Apprenticeship Week #NAW2018 the East of England LGA is shining a spotlight on examples of activities and events happening in Councils across the Region to celebrate apprenticeships in local government.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are currently recruiting and believe that apprentices have a very important role to play in their organisations. An apprenticeship is an ideal opportunity to gain a qualification, at the same time as gaining experience in the workplace and being paid a salary.
Sally Faiers, Systems Support Officer at Babergh and Mid Suffolk Councils firmly believes that an apprenticeship in a local authority can open up vast career opportunities, and explains, “local authorities are unique employers for apprentices, in that we can offer a range of experience in a variety of services, for apprentices considering their future career options.
“With the recruitment, we found that informal group discussions work better than traditional interviews for potential apprentices and we were so impressed with the three candidates recently put forward by MyGo (theYouth Employment service for 16 - 24 year olds in Ipswich and Suffolk) that we decided to offer all of them an apprenticeship on the same day.
“Our new recruits started on 19 February 2018 and have placements with Building Control, Planning, and Planning Compliance departments. Our training assessor, Gingernut Training provides comprehensive apprenticeship training as part of their placement.  This includes monthly visits and an online learning platform.  All training is delivered onsite and throughout the qualification apprentices will also be supported by their line manager and colleagues.”

Alongside the new recruits, Babergh and Mid Suffolk Councils are embracing NAW2018 by running a recruitment campaign to recruit an apprentice in Waste Services, based in Stowmarket:

Waste Services Apprentice Opportunity
The successful candidate will work to achieve an NVQ Business administration qualification. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in a career in waste and recycling and to gain experience in an office environment. We are flexible with the start date until exams have been taken, for the right candidate.
