Driving commercial skills in the region

6th December 2017

Our annual commercialisation master class took place on 28 November.  Now in its third successful year this is has become a must-attend event for officers and members looking to develop their skills to pursue a more commercial path to improve resilience by generating additional funds to support the delivery of core service priorities.

The master class focussed on opportunities for raising income and considered how local authorities need to adapt in order to realise these opportunities, including a need to develop in-house commercial skills and culture.

The event was also an opportunity for delegates to find out more about the jointly led East of England LGA and Essex County Council Business Accelerator Programme.

The Business Accelerator is an intensive programme of training, support, mentoring and development, designed to help emerging or developing local authority commercial ventures to make the most of their potential.

Based around a series of in depth, practical master-classes focussing on specific commercial skills, the programme also includes ongoing support to your business from the two experienced commercial professionals who facilitate and deliver these master-classes.

Unlike traditional individual skills training, the Business Accelerator aims to develop an entire commercial team and is available for groups of between 3 and 5 people from an individual local authority trading company, business or other appropriate commercial operation. The end result is the production of a new or revised Business Plan for the team to take back and implement “in the real world”.

The next Business Accelerator programme kicks off in February 2018 and further information can be found at: http://www.eelga.gov.uk/events/business_incubator_programme_2/
