Fishbowl coaching – an opportunity to develop your coaching approach by observing and participating in real life coaching situations.

In the session we will use the “fish bowl” method (the art of active listening) to observe an experienced coach at work with a coachee, on a real issue. This may be an issue relating to their work – or it may be an issue that a coach has with their coachee. As a participant, you will have the opportunity to work on an issue, practice your own coaching and learn from watching other coaches at work.

How it works
The Fishbowl is constructed around an observed coaching session - with one or more concentric circles of observers to the activity taking place. At regular intervals the facilitator will stop the action in the fishbowl and invite comments and observations from those in the inner circle. These may be taken forward by the existing coach or, with the agreement of the coachee,  we may invite a participant to take over from the coach and continue the work.  If an observer from the outer circle wants to join the conversation, they come forward to join the active discussion by occupying an empty chair or replacing someone in the inner circle. The coaching and discussion continues with participants frequently entering and leaving the fishbowl. When the coaching reaches a  natural conclusion, another coachee may be invited to present and work on their issue. When time runs out, the fishbowl is closed and the facilitator summarises the discussion.

Examples of topics to explore, include (but are not limited to):

  • Why do we feel stuck?
  • I’m not sure why that (technique) worked so well with one client but not with another?
  • I think I might be missing something –but what?
  • How do I manage confidentiality boundaries when we work in the same organisation?
  • How to get the best out of your team given their different personality styles
  • Leading and supporting your team in a changing environment
  • Conflict and applying coaching skills to difficult conversations
  • Dealing with objections and limiting beliefs
  • Coaching through a change of role or responsibility
  • Coaching for improved performance

This is an ideal opportunity for delegates to take part in a creative debate, which encourages dynamic participation, discussing and debating hot/key coaching topics and dilemmas in a safe environment. We hope to repeat this opportunity later in the year, with a variety of topics discussed at each date, so that every session is unique.
